Ube Pandesal
$3.75The purple ones. Soft, faintly sweet, gone by the afternoon.
Pandesal out of the oven, ube bread stacked purple on the rack, and a case of yema balls at forty five cents each. Artesia, Norwalk and the original in Milpitas.
Luisa & Son has been feeding the Filipino community around Pioneer Boulevard for years out of a small unit on South Street. The bread comes out through the day, the racks get refilled, and by six in the evening the pandesal shelf is usually looking thin.
It is the kind of shop where the prices are still written on little yellow tags clipped to the shelf, and where a bag of rolls costs less than a coffee somewhere else. Nothing about it is trying to be a cafe.
Three shops carry the name now. This is the Artesia one, with its own counter, its own regulars, and the mint green script sign out front that you can spot from the parking lot.

Prices as marked on the shelf tags in store. Stock moves through the day, so the rack looks different at nine in the morning than it does at five.
The purple ones. Soft, faintly sweet, gone by the afternoon.
The everyday roll. A bag of these and a cup of coffee is the whole point.
Same roll, whole wheat. Sold in the small bag.
The little rounded loaves stacked by the front rack.
Dense, firm, and built for slicing.
Filled with sweet shredded coconut.
Rolled thin with butter and sugar through the middle.
Mung bean filling, a shop staple.
Purple yam right through the loaf.
The clear cases by the register hold the small stuff: yema, macapuno, langka, buko pandan, cheese, mango, cashew. Tarts and polvoron sit at seventy five cents. People come in for a bag of bread and leave with a handful of these.

Cakes and celebration orders are handled at the counter. Give the shop a call and ask for what you need.
